A green tank is infact caused by an algae bloom. Guess what those are caused by. Overfeeding. Right now, do a blackout. Turn off the lights over the tank, and do not let any light in. Cover it up with something. Do not feed and let no light in for 3 days. Also, unless your tap water is loaded with neutrients, change water, 50 % isn't too extreme. After that, feed less, make sure your tanks gets no more than 8 hours of light a day, unless planted, and recieves no direct sunlight.

Overfeeding cause algae blooms because first of all when fish eat the stuff, it comes out in forms of nitrogen, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, which incidently, plants, such as algae, love. Also they are loaded with phosphates, neutrients and many other things that cause algae blooms.

A green tank is not caused by over feeding. You have an algae bloom. It happens to hundreds this time of year. Try this method, it normally works, if not you must use a chemincal, Start off by doing a 40 percent water change(dont worry, your fish will be fine), then turn off your tank light(s) and wrap a blanket or something large enough around your tank. Keep it covered for 5 days. This will eliminate any light source, and will starve that algae in the water. After 5 days do a 10 percent water change and all should be fine. If your light bulbs are more than a year old, replace them, and dont give your tank more than 8 hours a day, unless you have live plants. If this method does not work, go to a pet shop and pick up Algae Fix. This stuff works wonders. If you do the either method, keep all your filters running at all times.

Brother I had the very same problem with a 20 gallon long tank. I tried water changes and it did not help. First you probably have it close to a window. If so cover the window or move the tank. Next buy some algea removal drops. Wall-Mart has a bottle of this for about 3 dollars. After I put this in the tank the green cloud was gone but my water was still cloudy. Next I put in some drops that clear up cloudy water. Wall-mart to the rescue again It was about 3 dollars also. Just go to wallmart and look at near the medications for fish and pick out first a algea removing product and then after a couple of days buy the treatment for cloudy water. Now my tank is crystal clear.

Clean the tank and filter more often, then check how much light it's getting. Algae is a plant and depends on photosynthesis which means less light and nutrients results in less algae. The Algae Eater is a good idea as well. I do not suggest the ones called the Chinese Algae Eater as they can be mean and are known to attack other fish. A small Plecostomus (read baby) is the best as they are peaceful and almost always hungry. Ugly though.

If its actually the water that is green then you need to do water changes and move it away from sunlight. Green water is actually healthy for fish but it does have some down sides including the fact that you cant see your fish that well.

But if its on the walls of the tank then you can either scrape it off yourself or buy an algae eater. Make sure you look up info on what kind you want to make sure it is safe with your fish and your tank is big enough. Also move it away from sunlight (if it gets sunlight) or don't have your light on as much as you do now.

turn the light off!! it is an algae bloom and unless you have live plants you do not need to turn the light on unless you are looking at your tank.

Its caused by ammonia found in fish poop. there is a paket of special rocks you can buy to put in your water filter. Look in your local pet store. i cn't remember the name of it, but it really works.
