Most people who decide they're drinking too much just stop or cut back on their own.

AA teaches people that they are alcoholics for life and they must NEVER have another drink in their lives. People in AA who do relapse, end up drinking heavier and do so for longer periods of time. Sort of like the person on a diet who has a slice of cake then figures they've failed and go ahead and eat the whole thing.

Drinking doesn't cure stress, believe me, I tried. There's something called "the rebound effect", meaning if you drink because of stress, when you come down, you'll be more prone to stress so you'll drink more and so on and so on...

Exercise helps, so does deep breathing. If you want to read something on how to quit try: "The Small Book" or "Rational Recovery" by Jack Trimpey.

When I first quit drinking, I read a lot of autobiographies; the one thing they all had in common was that when faced with problems, they didn't give up on what they were trying to accomplish. I applied it to my drinking.

I wouldn't do these things, but I don't have an addictive personality. However, alcohol and smoking are just as addictive as some drugs. Drugs, however, are worse for the baby. Many doctors tell smokers who become pregnant NOT to quit cold turkey because it could disrupt the mother's chemicla balance and actually cause a miscarriage. I've known a couple women this has happened to. These women can't use a patch or gum to quit either and the doctors suggest cutting down over time. As for alcohol, the U.S. is one of the only countries whose FDA actually tell women to avoid drinking altogether. In England, doctors tell women no more than 1 drink per day and in most European countries a glass of wine is actually encouraged to improve blood flow. Like I said, I wouldn't do these things because I am nervous nelly and live by the book, but I wouldn't be so hard on those who choose to do it.

It is very very difficult to quit by yourself. Drinking is an addiction, and like all addictions, it's a disease. People treat it like it's something you can control. In the beginning, you probably could, but once you're hooked it's hard.
Try AlAnon, it's free and it WORKS!
Also, ask for help. Churches, family, good loyal friends. The alchohol may seem like your closest friend, your only real relief. That's your brain under the power of addiction. Your pleasure receptors are rewired, so be aware!
Good Luck,
All the Best

First thing you should do is get into a program like AA. You need to get into a support group for alcoholics. You have to learn how to manage your stress like a healthy person - excersize, talking it out, rest, sports, etc. There are many things you can do to manage stress. Take care of your alcohol problem - get into a program and then work on dealing with your stress without drinking.

If it's early enough, try substituting with another less destructive addiction like sex, or rock and roll. Then work out the psychology about what feelings you are surpressing with a professional group.
