jaygysler is very right in his writing.
It is for the tourist not to take certain things for granted and stay reasonably alert while touring. With a sensible cool head on your shoulders, you can eleminate ugly situations anywhere, even at your hometown; or can invite troubles anywhere.
In general, people of India are very hospitable and friendly. We have acquaintances abroad who make sure to visit India atleast once in two years everytime. They like the country very much and try to bring their friends also to visit India.
Take due care as you would be taking in your own country when travelling out of your town/new places. Take care of what you wear, don't flaunt your money and travel documents in public, seek help of tourist police if in need.

Nothing is safe. It's a matter of degree.
Maybe you should ask about statistics in India compared to where you live.
If it's less safe in India compared to where you live, you have to decide how much risk is worth taking but don't forget that there is a payoff to travel and you can control the risk to some extent with education and preparedness.
That said, I have a few female friends who have done it and they didn't regret it and would probably recommend it...with a few caveats such as above.

It is certainly safe for a single woman to travel through India, provided she respects the local culture and the people.

Yes. I've been traveling in India and Nepal several times, and never had problem.
Just be careful with common sense.
Experience it.
India is an amazing country.

You would be better off going to China where if any tourists are accosted the government takes this seriously and you are completely safe and have many beautiful places to visit.India is a beautiful country but the controls are not in place as countrys like Australia or China.

Yes - I agree that safety in this context is a relative term.
But rest assured, India is no exception. It is a safe place. For every crook or a bad person, just like any other place in the world, there are several goodmen. Take the normal safety precautions like you do for any tourist destiantion.

Yes. Its safe. Noone will do anything to you but there might be some language problems in some places. As you know China, Japan, India all have english problems.

By and large it is safe. There have been few incidences with the foreign girls. The percentage is very minimum. It is better to keep yourself to the major cities. The night life is different in Indian from other countries.

See, m n Indian myself, n i cn tell ya precisely.Its not rreally advisable to travel after 9 pm., especially if u r alone n white.Bt during daytime, its not really unsafe.Only u hv to maintain a distance with localites, i mean don; get over frndly too quickly.

it is not safe for women to travel after 9pm at night.... so don't take risks of travelling at night...
otherwise it is safe as any other place...
maybe difficulty with language....
