It is completely split...50% of the people I have asked say you can only enter or exit when the lane opens, and the other 50% say you can exit at anytime but you have to wait until the lane opens to enter.

So, I called the police department and asked an officer. He told me NO you cannot exit or enter the carpool lane until it allows.

My friend (one of the people who says you can exit anytime) called his local police department and was told YES you can exit at anytime but you cannot enter. Now I'm seriously confused...

It all began one day while driving in the carpool lane. I wondered what if a Police Officer pulls you over while you're in the carpool lane, what do you do? Do you wait until the lane opens or just cross the double lines and pull over? So, I just asked a few people, and the next one always said the opposite of the last... I think it is safe to say when a cop pulls you over, you pull over.

Do you have any thoughts on this elusive traffic law?

You are not supposed to enter or exit the carpool lane until the lane opens; the white line has a break in it. The concept here is that the cars in the carpool lane should be following each other as close as possible so the maximum amount of cars can fit it in the lane. They are supposed to open up when they are just before an exit, or just after an on-ramp. This is when the white line will have breaks in it, adn the only place where cars can exit or enter the carpool lane. If you cross the line when it is solid then you a violating the law.

If a police officer pulls you over then that is a different story, you must pull over if their is a break in the white line or not.

You can exit anytime but you cannot enter. Logic would dictate that it would be dangerous to drivers if they where just stuck in the carpool lane. Think about it like this, if there was something in the lane and you had to swerve to avoid it, would you get a ticket for exiting the carpool lane? No.

Washington doesn't have yellow lines on teh carpool lane, you can enter at any time. At least the parts I've been to are that way.
