I know that some turtles carry salmonella. Here's a link to some info about it. I had it once. It's awful!!! Probably best to just give the turtle a little good night pat on the head!

Salmonella is the key issue, and your turtle will have Samonella anytime it is in contact with soiled water.

Would you 'peck' a piece of raw chicken that has been sitting out? Your chance of getting Salmonella are almost exactly the same either way, and it would be the same kinds of Salmonella either way.

As for not 'hurting' the turtle... that is not quite true. Turtles generaly do not like being handled- although they can appreciate having their heads or throats stroked. Turtles are stressed by handling, being picked up, and even being 'loomed over' by us giants. Turtles generaly thrive best in tanks that minimize the 'staring giants' problem.

I would show my affection in a more appropriate way AND in a way that it will appreciate more- stroking its head or chucking its chin, whichever it likes best.

Turtles can carry salmonella. It's against the law to sell them in pet shops for this reason, at least in Texas. This may not be true for all turtles but I know it is for water turtles.

Don'y kiss it with you lips. Kiss your finger and then touch the turtle. Turtles carry salmonella.

I wouldn't do it. Turtles are notorious for carrying salmonella.

Salmonella is what they carry, I think. I'd be more concerned about your hands- that's how germs spread. Just make sure to wash em after you play with him.
