Turtles haveears, but seem to not respond to audible stimuli, only vibrations they can pick up through the shells. Since they only make simplistic noises at certain times, they just do not seem to assign any great importance to sounds.

Car rides? Side-necks are aquatic species... they should not be in dry cars for too long. Are you SURE this is a Sideneck?

I know that typically in amphibian populations neuromast are responsible for vibrations. They may not be able to necessarily "hear," but im sure they feel vibrations and gather the different pitches in them. . . low, high, medium, etc.
