The Island of the Day Before, by Umberto Ecco and also his book Foucault's Pendulum. use a dictionary and an encyclopedia to make sure that you understand the references. Red Dwarf, the book not the TV series, by Grant Naylor. The Hitch Hikers guide to the Universe, both the book and the original TV series. The Wizard of Oz and Thucydides History of the Peleponnesian War. Homer the Iliad, but not as much the Odyssey.

If you haven't read the New Sun series by Gene Wolfe (The Shadow of the Torturer, The Claw of the Concilliator, The Sword of the Lictor, and The Castle of the Autarch), then you are missing out on the most complex and intelligent work of speculative fiction since The Lord of the Rings.

I enjoy non-fiction and true crime. My favourite is "The Stranger Beside Me" by Ann Rule.
I also enjoy "The Sign and The Seal" by Graham Hancock. It's a VERY hard read though, but quite well researched.

Flutterby-- by Stephen Cosgrove
illustrated by Robin James
A Serendipity Book
I have the 14th printing original paperback, 1984
In a burst of laughter and moonshine one fine and beautiful evening, Flutterby was born. As her silver-blue cocoon shimered in the starlight she unfurled her wings and whinnied at the crystal night.
For as you see, Flutterby was not a common bug or butterfly but rather a smallest of small, winged, white flying horse.....................

if you like sci-fi: the Skylark series or the Lensman series by E.E. 'Doc' Smith or if you like twists on history you might like Harry Turtledove: Guns of the South, The Great War series or Colonization series. I find that Robert A. Heinlein is excellent. of course Micky Spillane's who dun its are good also.
