Dogs, without question! However, I think it's a really good idea for anyone who wants to have children to have the experience of raising a dog first. It will give them basic introductions to properly training and caring for another living creature so that the "creature" grows up happy, healthy and well-adjusted, instead of spoiled rotten and out of control. Dogs and kids- the similarities are striking.

Dogs. Easy one. Children are really expensive and talk back. Dogs offer unconditional love, and who can resist doggie kisses?

Robotic mermaids with eyes of coral mined fifty fathoms deep, teeth of petrified walrus tusk delicately scrimshawed so that each tells a moral fable of the days aboard the Pequod hunting that ghostly terror, Moby Dick. They would have scales not hard like diamonds but soft as otter fur, rainbow hued like a sundog seen off Morro Rock as we round Spooners Cove. Their hair would fly and fall like the firebird or egret plumes, like obsidian rook feathers against their perfect skin.

And they would sing, Jim, how they would sing! Odysseus had his crew lash him to the mast so that he could pull the ear plugs out to hear his Syrenea. Nothing compaired with these! The brave Ulysses would tear his arms off to get free of the ropes that bound him to the mast to throw himself overboard to drown happily in the emerald depths near their perch.

Each of these aquatic automatons would be fashioned differently to faintly resemble the most beautiful women of our age and yet be unique, as well. One might remind you of Charlize Theron, one of a younger Nichole Kidman, still another of Maria Sharapova, Jane March... ephemeral but all very lovely in confusion.

Are these creations aware? Do they have consciousness? What other features do they have behind scale but above what passes today for the clockwork of yesterday?

No, that is not for the telling. But choosing between having children or dogs around you seems so "Ginger or Maryanne." Don't you think?

Are you asking us to choose for ourselves or for you? Cause if you have to ask that question then you better choose the dogs.
