I, too, was very surprised that Murphy did not make the Hall of Fame. It's unusual for a two time MVP to have that long a career and not make it. I figured he'd go in easily once he was eligible.
A couple of things might have hurt his chances... first, he didn't have a lot of post-season exposure, having made the playoffs only once, in 1982.
The other thing that hurt him, I'm guessing, is that his career went downhill pretty quickly, and he was unable to do what a lot of people (myself included) THOUGHT he would do, in terms of career numbers.
He played in what was probably the best 'hitters' park in baseball, so I'm sure some HOF voters probably discounted his career numbers because of that.
Of the ten most similar players, Duke Snider (#2) is the only one who is in the HOF, although Ron Santo (#4) and Gil Hodges (#5) should probably be in the HOF as well, Joe Carter is the most similar. But Snider himself has only one HOF in HIS top ten comps, that being Johnny Mize).
2,111 hits is not, in itself, a HOF number. Murphy ranked 183rd after the 2004 season...since then, he might have dropped a spot or two)
Snider played in six World Series (winning two) and hit 11 World Series Home Runs, so that might give him an edge over Murphy in terms of his HOF chances.
It's true that many players with lesser numbers are in the HOF, but if a selection is later shown to be a mistake (as many have), I don't think we can really use that to say that everyone who's better than 'this guy X' has to be inducted.
In the end, to me, it's not Murphy's 'fault' that he didn't do what a lot of us thought he would do in terms of career numbers... he played as well as he could, and played hard every day, from his first major league game right up to his last. And whle it doesn't seem right, I think that if he had reached 400 HRs instead of 398, that actually might have put him over...
He still might eventually make it, especially when voters start re-evaluating some pre-steroids players in light of the common use of steroids over the last 10-15 years...
Let's hope that he eventually makes it, because I think he does deserve the honor... he certainly would not be lowering any standards if he were to be selected, that's for sure.

if Andre Dawson can get MVP on the Cubs and Ernie Banks could get into the HOF as Mr. Cub...before the Braves were worth spit...Murphy made them money when nobody else could.
Dale Murphy was an excellent player for Atlanta as well as Philly. He had 398 STEROID FREE homeruns and over 2000 hits...this guy was a great Christian man who played his heart out and would not have compromised his fans by taking steroids unnecessarily.

Yes, absolutely. It's the Hall of Fame not the Hall of Statistics. In his day he was feared. He came up to bat against your team and you weren't thrilled.
Put simply, he dominated for 6 years of his era:
7 time All Star, 2 time MVP, 5 Gold Gloves, 4 Silver Sluggers, Lou Gehrig Award, Roberto Clemente Award, 2 Slugging Pct. Titles, 1 OPS Title w/ 3 2nd Place OPS, Played all his teams games from 1982-1985, 2 HR Titles, 2 RBI Titles, and the most important in my opinion 4 Runs Created Titles.
His career numbers compare favorably to Hall of Famer Duke Snider, and up to the age of 35 compare favorably to Reggie Jackson (HOF), Billy Williams (HOF), & Dave Winfield (HOF).
Never got to show anything in postseason play. 3 career postseason games.

Dale Murphy was an outstanding player and you can certainly make a case for him being in Cooperstown. However I think he falls just a hair short.

He's so on the borderline. If he had just one or two more good years he would be in. For some mysterious reason he just lost it in his mid 30's. However, he should be in the HOF for all-time good guys.
