It's a tough choice but Sean Penn, Mel Gibson, Robert De Niro & Kevin Bacon are my favorites. You left out Jack Nicholson, the Oscar legend.

Anthony Hopkins.
Look at the range of this mans acting. From horror/thriller to drama to love stories and even some action.
If you need proof, watch the Human Stain with him, and then watch Silence of the Lambs.
I believe that he was even given very strong kudos at the most recent Academy Awards, something like a lifetime achievment award.
Amazing actor.

Hard to pick as they're all talented in their own way.
I would have to go with option 2.
Sean Penn was great in I am Sam. He was believable as a man who was mentally retarded, who only wanted what's best for his daughter played by Dakota Fanning (a young Meryl Streep in the making lol)
