I apologize for my brethren for so pointedly telling you that it's Gas Lamp not Gas Light. People call it Gas Light all the time, we're really not snobs about it! It's very fun, and crowded from Wednesday to Saturday night, and Sunday if any sports are on. There's great bars, Jimmy Loves, Martini Ranch, Bitter End. GREAT restaurants, Dakota, Heat, anything Italian on 5th (there's too many to mention, but they're all on the same side of the street and only encompass about 2 1/2 blocks) Dublin Square if you want Irish, Cafe Sevilla Spanish, ***** Last Resort if you want RUDE waitstaff (it's part of the gig, they're not really bad) and great crab. Greystoke...OR Croces if you want great food and a bit mellower music. Horton Plaza is right there if you have to shop. It's all very safe...there are police regularly patrolling on foot, bike, horse and car. Have fun, it's one of the best parts of San Diego

The Gas Lamp District (not Gas Light) is *the* party place in San Diego. There are tons of bars, shops, live music venues, great restaurants, etc. The Gas Lamp District starts a block north of Harbor Drive and extends for about a dozen blocks up 4th, 5th and 6th streets in downtown San Diego. It is definitely a party place - particularly on weekends - and it is a very safe place to hang. It is well lit, well patrolled and you'd have a hard time not having a good time there. Hope you get a chance to come and enjoy a really beautiful city!

Peace,

Radical Geezer

The area you're refering to is actually called the "Gas Lamp District" because it contains a number of the old gas-powered lamps from the later 1800s / early 1900s.

The nightlife in this area is pretty active, but be aware, parking is expensive (especially on nights when the Padres are playing at Petco Park). I would recommend parking in Old Town and taking the Trolley or a Cab.

The clubs are always hopping, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Most of the venues charge a cover to get in and have expensive drinks. Of course being female I'm sure you won't have any problem getting a guy to buy you a drink or two ;-).

The area is generally pretty safe with plenty of security and law enforcement in the area. As long as you stay within the district (4th, 5th, and 6th avenues) you should be completely safe.

I would recommend visiting The Bitter End bar.

The Gaslamp District is definitely a happening nightspot in downtown San Diego. It has lots of upscale clubs, restaurants, and bars. It is definitely safe for a group of young single women who like clubbing or want to check out live music. Check out the link for where the cool places are after dark:

In the Gaslamp, there are always lots of people on the street, and usually police officers, so it is a pretty safe area.

Nice area, but expensive restaurants. And be careful if you're drinking, they set up sobriety checkpoints all over that area the night we went there.
