This website can give you some ideas:

Also, Children's Books that Make Great Graduation Gifts
"Oh, the Places You'll Go" by Dr Seuss is one of several children's books that make excellent gifts for graduates. If you are looking for a unique graduation gift for a high school or college graduate, I recommend these children's books for their illustrations, entertainment value, wit, and wisdom.

Then add some gift certificates inside the book to some favorite fast food places. Your 8th grader will love it!

I just made my 8th grade graduation!!!! :D
Um...4 a girl, it depends what they like. For example, if they luv music and bands, I would suggest concert tickets from Ticketmaster. If they are really girly, they would probably prefer make-up or jewelry form Claire's.
Um..a boy would be hard because I'm a girl. Maybe they would want...sports tickets if they are into sports. Or maybe they would want cologne (for a certain lady. ) I'm kidding.
One really good answers that any kid would be happy with is money. I got alot of money and I am able to spend it on whatever I want. I hope this helps.

I have to agree with popmom, im 16 and i usually make a home made card for my mom for mothers day, and my sister for her b-day. They always love them! But it deppends on the person, and if they are the kind that only think if you get them things that cost money you care about them.
