To win the world cup a team needs to win at least 4 times:
- suppose the team ties 3 times in the first round (no wins) and advance in the second round.
- second round needs to win to advance to quarter finals (1 time)
- quarterfinals needs to win to advance into semi-finals (2 times)
- semi-finals need to win to advance to the final (3 times)
- win the final (4 times)

In the medal round, four wins are required to win the cup. But to advance to the medal round, a team could theoretically win no games. Scotland almost advanced without a win back in (I think) 1998.
Let's say the four teams are Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta and these are the results of the round robin games:
A 2-1 B and G 0-0 D
A 1-0 G and B 0-0 D
A 1-0 D and B 0-0 G
The final group standings would be this:
Alpha 3-0-0 9pts. 4GF 1GA
Beta 0-2-1 2pts. 1GF 2GA
Gamma 0-2-1 2pts. 0GF 1GA
Delta 0-2-1 2pts. 0GF 1GA
By virtue (?) of scoring a goal, team Beta would finish second on tiebreakers and advance to the second round, despite not winning a single game.
Similarly, it's possible to finish *third* in a group with *2* *WINS* and be eliminated.... The current group setup is screwy and needs to be fixed.

Well essentially all a team needs to do is get out of the group stages. Mathematically they can tie all 3 games and get in, but that is very very rare, so at the very least they can win 1 game, draw 2, in the group round. Then win 4 straight in the knock-out tourney.

After the team has passed the group stages (Usually the minimum of points a team can pass with is 4 points, depending on the group)(1 Win & 1 Tie) Then they need to win all of the Knockout Stage games. (4 straight Wins)
-Top 16
-Quarter Finals
-Semi Finals
