when someone is having problems understanding a concept. Say they are having a lot of difficulties understanding something like differentials, and you think it is SO easy. Showing off that you're smart will frustrate them and make them feel stupid.
But I guess it's OK to look smart anytime. Why not? Sometimes I act like I don't know something so that the person teaching me will feel like they're doing some good (don't ask, I've got a messed up mind), or so that I don't appear to come off as a "show-off".

If you mean by looking smart you mean asnwer the question correctly then it's not okay if makes look like an ***. Even if you know the answer don't answer every single question that a teacher my ask in the class, that is unless you want to piss people off.

Being smart means being alert at all times. (not dictionary meaning). That everybody should try to be at all times including when they sleep. Not being smart it not OK.
