I agree with the two guys above here. He should ride at 5-10 mph faster than the prevailing "flow" of traffic. That way, no one is overtaking him. He is riding "in control" and has to remain alert and awake to change lanes frequently. Also, police will generally "give" a bike 5 or 10 over because they realize this is actually safer.
Just advise your guy that he shouldn't "vroom vroom vroom" on the streets. Hooning is frowned upon by law enforcement, and your fellow drivers.
Top safe speed on that bike on the highway? I wouldn't do much more than "the ton", but then, I got a "felony speeding" ticket in Virginia once upon a time. $1,500, six months suspended license and a month JAIL (suspended). Ouch.
Some folks can get downright nasty about speeders.

I think that he should go at the speed that he is comfortable with.

One must remember that unlike a car there is nothing around you to keep you safe. And road rash is a real biatch! Also wearing a helmet is always a good thing, just ask Ben Roethlisberger. Also there is that thing called the speed limit. Which is determined as the safest speed within 5 miles per hour as the safest to travel on the road you are traveling on.

He should have some fun with his bike, but he should also be safe. Remind him that you want him around for all the festivities of life! I remind my hubby when he goes for a ride in his Mustang GT, or when he's looking for more horsepower for aforementioned car. :)

With respect to "moterkat", who is, unlike some, a motorcyclist, I would suggest that he ride slightly faster than the flow of traffic. This allows the rider to be concerned mainly with what is in front of him, or her, and less about what is coming up behind (still using the mirrors and keeping the eyes in motion). At the same time this allows for the practice of "lane positioning", keeping a cushion of space around the bike rather than riding right next to another vehicle.

In my experience, riding at same speed as surrounding traffic is recipe for disaster. Cars/trucks/SUV's don't see you and move into the 'empty' space. usually 5~10mph faster is safer but never ever slower than traffic around you. On 3 or more lane dont use middle lane as traffic comes at you from both side

well where I live the fine is $10.00 for every mile over the speed limit, then you will get a ticket for excessive show of speed, reckless driving and another one for endangering other vehicles. if he must let him take it up to 90mph and pray he doesn't hit a pot hole. Remind him the bike only has 2 positions up and down, there is no middle point.

i think he COULD go very fast but SHOULDN'T go very fast considering he has a wife at home. Be a safe rider cuz other motorists can't see motorcycles. Use caution and for gosh sakes, wear a helmet!!

everybody has to try it once, so he should find a straight empty stretch of road and see how fast it'll go- then he should stick to the speed limit.

So other people will look at them and be impressed by the size of their bike. The translation of "womp womp, boom boom and vroom vroom" is "look at me, look at me, look at me!"
