All seriousness aside, does anyone think we'd give up that toehold in Iraq now, especially since we pulled out of Saudi not too long ago? How better could we lord it over on Iran and Syria than by having bases right next door?

I think that it would be foolish to exit Iraq right now and that is because if we leave, Civil War will erupt between the Shiite muslims (who get along with Iran) and the Saddam loyalists (Who, by the way, are the minority) The Shiites would undoubtedly win, because not only do they outnumber the Saddam loyalists, but they would also have Iran supporting them. Iraq would be run by Iran, who 1. Want to have nuclear weapons and 2. Would be in control of most of the oil in the middle east, making them the most powerful country in the middle east. That would be a disaster. Also, when we begin to help rebuild Iraq, we would have to remain over there so that the money dosen't fall into the hands of corrupt people of orginizations (Such as Oil for Food) and actually gets put to use. To leave Iraq now would be a mistake. But, I, like so many others, would like to see our boys (and girls) come home.

Nation building is a very long, complicated, and expensive process. I have seen estimates that when the fighting fianlly does stop the US will probably be stationed there for the up to 25 years afterwards. Look at Germany we still have bases there and that war ended over 60 years ago. Yep will be there forever.

Why would we leave? We need to protect our oil prices. Think about it. I am not for the war at all but look we complain about oil price now what will happen when China keeps buying all the oil or the Sadie's raise the price more until we can do something to run our liefs with out there oil then we need to stay their. Can't afford gas as it is.
But that's just my .02

Well, there will probably be U.S. soldier in Iraq from now on. It is like Germany there have been U.S. troops there since WWII to keep a strong hold and quick response force in the regions same will go for Iraq.

We have NOT built permanent bases in Iraq. Congress would have to appropriate funds to do so, and although they're debating this issue right now, it appears to be failing. Our installations in Iraq are temporary.

We aren't going anywhere. We'll keep a large base open there, just like we have a base in Cuba, and for pretty much the same reason.

Nope and never did. This is why W had such a hard time coming up with and exit strategy. Shoot, we'll be there till the oil runs out.
