the guy who's lazy, dimwitted, ex-military, clinically depressed, old and single, and still obsessed with his ex-wife--Bill.

We can all probably identify with every character on the show, in one fashion or another.
There is something stodgy and by-the-book in all of us, somewhere, that resembles Hank. We all feel misunderstood at some point in our lives, like Boomhauer. We all pity ourselves in some way or another, like Bill. We all need approval for our accomplishments, like Peggy. We all wanted to be something that our parents had no concept of, like Bobby wanting to do stand up. There is at least a glimmer of wanting to believe in conspiracies and government plots, and often not seeing what's right under our nose, like Dale. And, as Kris Kristofferson so aptly said, "everybody needs somebody to look down on," like Hank's neighbor from Laos.
Those you can't identify with represent, at the very least, somebody you know. Perhaps they represent parts of ourselves that we just haven't recognized yet.
I love that show. grin.

Bobby is great I liked when he was the Rodeo Clown. Mr. Doughtrieve is funny I like it when he worked at the uppity hair salon and had to act like he was gay.
