That is to say, is it important to be happy during your life or is it more important to be successful? I see so many people who honestly believe that the one who dies with the most toys wins. But I thought that was just a stupid saying to sell bumper stickers, now I’m not so sure. Tell me what you think.

I’d probably be more inclined to think that happiness is more important than success. But is it a right? I think you have the duty to yourself to be happy first and foremost and that includes being honest to yourself, otherwise you’ll never find true happiness. If along the way should you find success, that would be an added bonus but it would not be more important that finding true happiness. The gathering of material goods is by no means an indicator of having lived a successful or happy life. It just means that you had a lot of stuff that you’d be giving to other people when you die.

Personally though I don’t think there are any god given rights, as it were.

There is no God TO give rights; they are conferred by humans to other humans. Our right to pursue happiness, in whatever fashion we see fit, is granted by our Constitution. It is not found in the Bible or the Quran (or probably any other holy book), since obedience to a god means that you give up whatever makes YOU happy and do whatever makes the GOD happy. The god does not care about your happiness, success, or well-being, as long as the god is happy.

Is it important to be successful? Well, what does success mean to YOU? It is different things to different people. If you consider yourself successful at doing the things you do, if you are basically content with your life, then you are, by your own definition, a successful person. A millionaire might look at your life and consider you unsuccessful because you don't have a bulging bank account and several homes. You might look at his life and think him a failure because he's been divorced five times, has stress-related health problems, and can only keep friends because of his money. Success is in the eye of the beholder.

That bumper-sticker saying--"He who dies with the most toys, wins."--is meant as a cynical observation of the pursuit of happiness and success. You may have the most toys, but you're dead, so you can't enjoy them. Thus, you are unsuccessfully successful.

Happiness and success are God given rights, but you must earn them. Success is easier to achieve, I believe, than happiness, and success, related to as how much money you get to have, will not bring you happiness -- more often than not, it brings the opposite.
Solution: become successful and share your wealth with those who need it, whether it be charity, or selecting one or two people at a time and help them progress in life. You cannot imagine the happiness that can come from sharing. As well, you don't have to be rich to do this. Simply help those who are in worst shape than you. Godspeed! Take care.

Of course, God loves to see his children suceed or be happy. And who does not want to? But i think none of the two is of great importance. We're all aliens in this world, our real residence is in heaven so if we lived a hard life here, it's better, than living a happy or successful life here. By the way, what do you mean by success and happiness?

I would say that happiness is a god given right while success is a privilege that you must work for. I think that success does bring some people happiness, but it's only part of it.

success depends on many parameters other than your efforts, hence success is not in your hand alone. But happiness can be felt independent of success or failure. It is in your mind. Anchor your mind to any subject or object which gives you happiness. At the same time learn to detach your mind from the troubling subject or object. Have attachement with detachement facility.

Neither are a god given right. If you want to be successful, you have to work at it. If you want to be truly happy, you have to work at it. Material things don't matter when you die, unless your family is inheriting everything. But do you really want your family to fight over who gets what after you die, that happens all the time. Don't you want your family to remember you for being a happy person?

Neither is a God-given right. More important to be happy. Do people in 3rd world countries know they are poor? I heard they feel sorry for us because we have so much in USA.

your God given right is that of the "pursuit of" happiness- not success nor subtle drugs will ensure that you actually capture happiness.
