The Sun will be closest to the whole planet in January, since that's when Earth reaches perihelion. However, in January the Northern hemisphere will be tilted away from the Sun. In July we'll be at aphelion (farthest point from the Sun), but the Northern hemisphere will be tilted towards the Sun and we'll have the longer days (and therefore, summer).

I guess you should talk to an astronomer to find out for sure. I believe i read some time ago that since the orbit around the sun is not a perfect circle, in the northern winter the Earth is actually closer to the sun than in Summer. However due to the Earths 23* tilt we in the northern hemisphere receive more direct energy from the sun in our summer, making us warmer.

The earth is at its orbital perigee during the Northern Hemisphere's winter season. It's cold because we are tilted away from direct sunlight at that time.
