I was an avid body builder once upon a time. My period was null and void for months since started working out. I was so fit and tight and wore a thong bikini everyday on the beaches of California. One day after going to the beach, I had really bad heart burn that didn't seem to go away. I went to the doctors and was told I was seven months pregnant. Two months later I gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby girl. So, I can tell you for atleast seven months I didn't know I was pregnant. The last two months I gained a small pooch and had my daughter there after.

Well, for one thing, if a woman has had a miscarriage, she can be in denial about getting pregnant again. She may emotionally think it's going to be another miscarriage so she doesn't consider herself really pregnant in her own mind. Overweight women tend to lose weight when pregnant and some women have no nausea or other indicators. A teenager could easily choose not to go in for a pregnancy test and not get prenatal care because of fears. Some women still have light periods with a healthy pregnancy. Some women have irregular periods. My guess is that for whatever reason, a womand doesn't want to admit that she is pregnant - perhaps her husband doesn't want a baby, or she is a teenager with no one to support her. I have a very controlling person in my life, not my husband. I was in denial about being pregnant for the first 7 weeks or so, if I just let that go on and never took an hpt and never got prenatal care, I could easily end up in the ER saying I didn't really know I was pregnant - if I didn't have the doctor saying so and no positive HPT because I never tested. For me, that would be easier that dealing with it. But, I know I have to face reality so I've accepted it now! Some women due to their body shape and weight - no one would ever guess if they were pregnant either! The other thing being that some women are totally more in tune with their bodies and that something is going on than others.

My cousin is pregnant with her second child and didn't know until she was 6 months into it!! She's due in July (I think) and is having a boy! And she just found out around a month ago! It's crazy, I know...I don't see how she didn't know she was pregnant either!! But some people just don't pay attention to the signs...that's my only guess as to what it could be!!

I don't know how it could be either, but it apparently does happen. The only instance of this happening that I had first hand knowledge of involved a very large woman. Her story was extremely similar to the one you related. The woman next door to me, also a large woman, is 8 months pregnant (she knows she is), but because of her excessive weight does not appear any different. I guess it is possible.

you can't possibly know for certain unless you've experienced this first hand. I always thought I would know but for example women like myself with PCOS have irregular periods anyways so would just disregard absent periods. Some women carry in their backs and dont show at all throughout the pregnancy. Some women still have regular bleeds throughout pregnancy.
It does sound obsurd but it does happen. I read about one woman who always said oh how do they not know?? And she laughed at stories. She's had 3 children and then went into labour and had another without knowing she was pregnant. She changed her mind! lol
I just read back some of the answers. Only if she's fat/obese???? COME ON PEOPLE!!!!!! If you knew anything about obese people you'd know it is extremely difficult to conceive when you are obese, let alone know that you have! IT IS NOT JUST OBESE PEOPLE THAT DO NOT KNOW THEY ARE PREGNANT. Don't be so ignorant.

NO! I would say during the first 5 months, it is possible not to know...if you have absolutely no symptoms. But once the baby starts to gain weight and move around, there is no telling yourself that it is just gas! Besides that, wouldn't you wonder why you havn't had a period, gaining weight or have more discharge?? You've have to be completely stupid! Also, I "knew" I was pregnant before I found out, because there are definately emotional feelings.

I don't understand how can woman NOT know that she's pregnant? Before I found out I was pregnant, I knew because I just didn't feel right.

Typically this happens with overweight women with irregular cycles. People that are really overweight sometimes dont gain much weight during their pregnancy and I guess the kicks, I dont know. My baby doesnt move much so I guess if she's unaware of the pregnancy she may chalk it up to bubble guts or something. Just a hypothesis. I often wonder the same.

It's darn rare, but it does happen. Some women mistake the fetal movement for gas or intestinal discomfort. Some women don't gain weight, and in rare cases women who menstrate irregularly don't notice a change. In even rarer cases, a woman may continue to have spotting while preganant that she mistakes for full menstration.
