hawii was annexed in 1898 when the us was at war with spain. it became a state when the us was not officialy at war with anyone. did you mean when it was annexed?

Vietnam. Korean War ended in 1953; Hawaii became state in 1959.

The answer is actually Vietnam.
Although we didn't "officially" get involved in combat operations until 1965 the first American casualty in South East Asia occurred when Lt. Col Peter Dewey was shot and killed while on his way to the airport on September 23, 1945.

1959, nobody. it was just after the korean conflict and before the vietnam conflict. there was the cold war going on, but that wasn't really a war, just a political sabre rattling.

No one? Korea was over and while Eisienhower had sent advisors to Viet Nam no troops had been sent yet.
