You are looking for cubic yards. If you have your length and width in feet take those dimensions and divide each by 3 that will make them yards. If your depth is in inches divide it by 36 and that will give you your yards. After you get those figures multiply the 3 together l * w * d = cubic yards. If you are ordering concrete and I'm assuming you are, that is how many yards you need plus some extra.

First thing is to keep in mind there are 27 cubic feet per cubic yard.

You will need to convert inches to feet. The conversion formula is:
inches ÷ 12 = feet

The formula for cubic yards is:

cubic yards = (depth_in_feet) x (width_in_feet) x (length_in_feet) ÷ 27

To do it all in inches:
cubic yards = (depth_in_inches) x (width_in_inches) x (length_in_inches) ÷ 46656

[There are 46,656 cubic inches per cubic yard]

Or, to figure square feet at a specific depth in inches:
cubic yards = (depth_in_inches ÷ 12) x square_feet ÷ 27

There are some shortcuts also. For example, for a depth of 3 inches, take the square_feet and divide by 108 = cubic yards.
For a depth of 2.5 inches, take square_feet and divide by 129.6 = cubic yards.

To calculate a shortcut factor, take 12 divided by the depth in inches and multiply by 27. This will give you the factor to divide total square feet by to get cubic yards for that depth in inches. For example the factor above (108) = (12 ÷ 3) x 27.

The formula is true for any material, notwithstanding changes in volume due to pressure and/or temperature. Some materials change in volume, such as water, natural gas, etc.

One cubic yard at 3 1/2 inches deep will fill 93 sq. ft. Divide 553 sq. ft. by 93 and you get 5.9 cubic yards of concrete. Or 6 yards to make it easy.

It's not a formula, it's a unit conversion.

Volume to Volume, sq ft to sq yards.

27 sq ft (3 x 3 x 3) = 1 sq yard.

3 feet to a yard, hence 9 sq.feet in a sq.yard.

If youwant volume, convert inches of thickness to yards (dvide by 36), and multiply by sq.yards. You will get cubic yards.
