Yes, in the days of the wild, when the first few generations of mankind were living all by themselves, there were numerous fears they were open to from others members of mankind and might was the right. The purpose of religion was to organise and discipline people and to instill fear of the supreme, so that the members of human race did not harm others of the same race. That was then and that purpose is served. Today our civilisation has come to a stage of development where it is realised that there need not be fear of supreme power because future is unknown and nature is fair to all. Now the fear of the unknown has translated to the fear of the powerful. And we do not need that.

No, religion is not obsolete.
Archaeology tells us that ancient societies had religious rituals. Religions come and go. The Shakers are gone, but the Bahai and Mormon religions which started much later are still around. And let's not forget Wicca, which is really a very new belief system in modern America. People still seek answers to the same basic questions; Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? How should I live my life? How should I treat others? How do I cope with my troubles? What is happiness and how do I find it?
Terrorists are not really religious at all. They're tribal criminals who hide behind their religious affiliations. Catholics and Protestants who kill each other in Northern Ireland aren't really arguing over religion. It's really a tribal struggle for land & power that uses faith instead of skin color or nationality to distinguish "Us" from "Them"
The same thing is true in the Middle East.

Religion is obsolete in that the sum of human knowledge concerning both science and philosophy forces insurmountable difficulties for the theistic position. Just one hundred years ago, we did not have 1/10 of the understanding about our world that we have now. I think religion will slowly die out in the next two centuries.
Religion is definitely still a dominating force in the world today, but I think we'd all be better off without religion. It causes more problems for the world than it solves.
I'm of the John Lennon Imagine religion. "Imagine there's no heaven, no hell below us, above us only sky... Nothing to kill or die for."

obsolete in regards to what? Science has undoubtedly come to replace religion as the accepted way to explain natural phenomenon. (Just look at how creationism and intelligent design claim that they are "scientific" and the traditional views of science will be or already are proven wrong.)
So in that sense, religion has long since been obsolete, even among its most fervent supporters.
In regards to providing a sense of purpose in life, that is relative to the person in question. It would be accurate to say that as long as one person finds meaning in religion, religion is not obsolete for the purpose of providing meaning.

Religion is not obsolete. Every single world leader is religious, it might not be Catholicism but something. Every good person in this world gets guidelines from religion. Most terrorists groups do it because of religion. And finally, whether or not you want to believe it there is a heaven or hell and your religion (orlack of it) helps you determine where you go.

Religion is found even in the most isolated of societies. It will never be "obsolete" as long as human beings have anxiety about their mortality. All religions try to answer the question of what happens to our souls when we die, and other profound questions for which we all need answers.

Obsolete suggest out of date. Try telling God that HE is out of date. Additionally, try telling this to billions of worshipers worldwide. Remember, you are the one who asked the question.

Nope. Still a dominating factor in the lives of most people throughout the world. Don't believe it? Just wait for the rationale behind the next suicide bombing.

Basis of all religions are same - do good to others, be nice to others etc etc. Only the preachers prophets and gurus etc etc claim that they are the inventors. Basic religion will be there as long as the homo sapiens are there.
