try Roach Pruf. It is a blue powder the ants will carry back to their nesting area, and the powder will dry them out.

Mine were so bad I did call the Orkin man. Basically, they come out and spray a 3 ft. high band around the house. This needs to be done twice a year. How is this different than products you buy yourself? It is a little stronger but the residual is greater. Meaning theirs lasts longer when it rains, etc. Even the Orkin man said we could buy a jug of Bug Be Gone at Wal Mart and it would work as well, we would just need to repeat every 2 weeks as opposed to the direction on the jug which claim it lasts for months. We did this and worked like a charm. It got rid of the spiders too.

I have used this remedy for years, go to Walmart and purchase some good old 20 Mule Team Borax laundry soap, pick up one of the cheapo ketchup squirt bottles at a dollar store, put the dry laundry soap in the bottle and apply along baseboards cabinet bases, anywhere you see the ants, leave it down until you no longer see any signs of the ants, then vacuum up the excess laundry soap, they carry it back to the nests and it will kill them. Then you will have the remaining laundry soap to do laundry, this fix will only cost you about four bucks, around three for the soap and a buck for the ketchup bottle. I do this every spring and am not bothered with ants the rest of the season.

If you're not ready to call terminix - then go to Home Depot and get the kind of ant spray that lasts 6 months where you spray the entire border of your home from the outside. Then put ant traps on the inside along with the ant spray for the inside. That's basically what the pros do.

If you live in a house then here's the best thing you can do! Ants cant stand sulpher. Go to a Hardware store or feed store if there's any around. Buy the powder about 5 lbs of it it's not expensive. Spread it evenly around your house and if you can under your house as well! By By ants

Try grits! Sprinkle the grits straight out of the bag all around the outside of the house. Then find out where their favoiter port of entry is inside your house and put down a small bowl of the dry grits. The ants eat the dry grits and it blows up in side them and kills them. They take it back to the queen and she eats and dies. The draw back is that it will take a few days, but on the plus side there is no poison if you have kids or pets to worry about, and it is cheap. We use it in our yard to get rid of the fire ants. It really does work.

If you are looking for something non-poisonous you can try Diatomaceous Earth. It is a powder that is dealy to anything with an exoskeleton. You can pick it up at Lowe's, etc.
