Boiling water gets rid of them and is the cheapest.

If they are actually in the fire pit themselves thats easy start a fire. If you mean the surrounding area pull them up and spray a weed killer like round up just check first to make sure it is pet friendly.

Straight from the manufacturer, just let it dry before letting the pets out. Farmers also use it because it breaks down in the soil within 3 days.

That all depends . You say it is a firepit ? If you want nothing at all to grow there , mix four parts water to one part salt . Nothing will grow there for a couple of years . It is just salt , so it won't harm your cat !

Roundup will work . And as he says , onnce it's dry won't hurt your cat . But the salt water is cheap and just as effective !

Roundup.
Cut the weeds back if tall and spray roundup on the re-sprouts and remainders. Roundup will not harm your pets. Just keep them away till dry.
