If your DVD collection is large, you may want to forgo the shelf and bulky plastic DVD box cases in favour of plastic envelopes and binders. I picked some up envelopes along with binders and plastic CD sleves (computer section) at the local DIY shop . You can catagorize your DVDs in binders and it will take a heck of a lot less space on a normal shelf.

I had this same problem, as I have a quite large collection of DVD's (more than 200). I searched around Walmart (found nothing worthwhile) and then Zellers, where I found a suitable shelf for $60. it holds all of my DVD's, and was easy to build. It is sturdy, black (to match any decor), and even comes with a wall anchor so that it will not topple over onto pets or small children. It looks great and I highly recommend it! Also, another nifty idea I had to make shelves on the wall, was the extra boards of mdf that they supply in the box to keep it from getting damaged. All I did was buy a few drywall screws, woodscrews, and a few mounting brackets ($5 total), and attached to the wall behind my couch! Voila, instant shelving, without having to buy any wood! I imagine anyone else would have just thrown out the extra pieces.

You can buy a box of shelf parts that will have all the parts you need at stores like Wal-Mart or Target. You will need a hammer and screwdriver. Or you buy parts, like shelf brackets and pre-cut shelves at Home Depot.

You don't, unless you're extremely good at wood crafting and have the tools (or access to them). Then, if you are and do, go to it and make the best shelf ever!!!! The "specs" can be had at any given craft store or any place that sells wood - wouldn't ya' think?
