I don't really know a lot about how to set up networks, wireless routers etc., I know what they are but I really need advice about what I need and how I can set up a network of some sort so that I can work from home istead of going into my office everyday. I have my own office and I have 2 staff who come in every morning. I want to be able to communicate with my staff from home i.e. when a customer wants a document translated, typed, etc. and I have to do it; so, how or what do I need to set up, something so that I can relay documents between me and my staff?

G'day,

Considering the size of your business, VPN (as suggested by the previous answerers) will be quite a big expenditure for you, since you will need a server, with additional license for Terminal Services and a static IP address with your ISP (Internet Provider) so you can dial-in to your server or workstation anytime anywhere.

Probably the best solution will be to use e-mail and make sure you are using broadband both at home & office to make e-mail traffic faster (since I assume you will have attachments with your e-mails). I know a document translator who does not have a permanent office, just e-mail and faxes.

Hope this helps. Good Luck :)

Yup, Virtual Private Network (VPN) is the way to go.

It is not easy to install and configure. I'm not quite sure, but i think it needs a server set up.

Once that is done, you will be able to access the files on your work pc from home and also work on it and communicate with your employees.

There are other ways in which you can connect to a remote pc and work on it, however it is not recommended in a business environment because of the fact that there will be several important, secure, private information being passed through the network. If its a VPN, security is very assured.

You need to set up a virtual private network; not something that is simple to explain typing it out. I recommend finding someone to assist you who is familiar with setting this sort of arrangement up.

Alternatively, you can have your staff email you documents that you need to work on, and you can email them back to the office, and you can communicate via email.

like said before, set up a VPN (virtual private network) when you have this kind of setup, your pc acts like it is at your office, you can pull files that had been saved on the network drives, the problem is that, to set this up you need to have a server with a server class OS and a static IP which means money from your pocket, and someone to set it up...

I use the arcaic useal style, I'm at home, I get an e-mail with a file attached to it, someone gives me a call, I work on it and e-mail it back, easy to do.

Well, first off there are 3 modes:
b (normal)
g (fast)
a (I think its called a....anyway, super fast)

First you need a connection speed at DSL or higher.
Then, read the instructions, 'cause the setup changes for each type of router.
