Hi,
Internet SPAM is the latest nuisance of today. SPAM is a commercial mail sent by companies to attract you to their products. Some of them sell objectionable p*rnographic materials as well.
Yahoo has developed SPAM Guard. This system protects your in-box from potentially harmful and malicious messages.
Probably you wanted to know, how come the spammers know your address? There are a lot of ways for them -
Firstly, if you disclose your email address to such sites that do not have any privacy policy, they will sooner or later sell your email address (yes, you read that right, your email is worth money!) Examples of such sites may be shopping and community sites. I will not take any names here.
Secondly, if you mention any email on any web page of yours something like me@mydomain.com (it can be your homepage, your blog, anything) There are special programs called screen readers which crawl the Internet and look for emails like this. They make a central database and then start spamming you.
Thirdly, often spammers use a combination system to generate email addresses and send mass mails to them. The emails generated in such a way, may or may not be legitimate, but there is a strong possibility of having one e.g. joe123@yahoo.com, joe321@yahoo.com (you might have seen such emails)
Fourthly, many people use forwards to pass on funny messages and other gossip. These messages carry a large amount of emails of people who had earlier forwarded this message. Now, if this mail is forwarded to a spammer, you know what he will do.
Fifth, If any of your friend is infected by a worm, you can get SPAM from his email as well.
Remedy :-
* Pull on the Yahoo Spam Guard.
* DO NOT open any mail which you think has come from an unknown source. Some spammers add code that notifies the sender once the email is opened. That way, if the list they used was autogenerated, they can easily filter the legimate ones.
* DO NOT forward messages. If you want to forward messages, use a different email account than your personal one.
* DO NOT open any mails that have attachments and seem to come from an unknown source. In fact there are programs that can spoof your friends's address. So be cautious.
I am sure I must have enriched your knowledge.
Cheers!

If you are getting messages containing attachments with the following types: .exe, .vps, .pif., .scr, and .bat and you do not know who they are from, then it is highly possible that they are containing malicious programs such as worms, viruses and trojans. These file types are seldom associated with a valid use.
You are most probably on some spammer's list. So I recommend that you never open these messages to avoid infection and report them as spam.
