I have my own opinions just wondering about you guys (KEEP IN MIND THEY WERE ALL ON SIMILAR major labels and shared similar careers)

Blink and Green Day sold out to be famous. Their lyrics were so much tougher, nastier and gritter before they got signed to a big label. Now they are restircted to what they sing.

The Clash and Pistols, in the 70s, were in the same boat. They signed to a big label and got more famous nationwide than underground. But they still got more freedom even with a big label than Green Day or Blink 'cuz things weren't monitored back then.

That's what the guy was meaning...

no i dont think they are sell outs at all....i mean the clash and the sex pistols are both way more popular and are selling way more albums now and recently than they did when they were still playing and in their own time....also green day sold out twice u cant beat that.....but its not like bands want to sell out....if you were in a band and you had some great fans and all but u were getting evicting becasue u couldnt pay rent and could barely save up enough for food, if someone gave you a deal with a major lable youd take it, i mean who cares about being called a sell out...u have a bigger fan base, more money, able to live more comfortably, fame......and yeah u can be like but it should be all about the music....well face it it is never all abot the music people need money to live....there is no such thing as a free lunch

Would people stop using the phrase "selling out" already? It is cliche and annoying. If a band still makes alright music, then it doesn't matter how much press coverage or how many songs they record for soundtrack. Even though I wouldn't say any of those bands besides the Clash made excellent music, (the Sex Pistols recorded ONE album, c'mon they are overated) they all did/are continuing to do a decent job. So, really your question is pointless.

Who the heck is Blink 182? Green Day? They aren't even close to the calibur of talent & influence that are the Sex Pistols & Clash.

lol. back in the day the sex pistols made it clear they were just out for the cash, remember "cash from chaos?". good on em, at least they never lied about their motives. when they toured in the mid 90s (without sid obviously) it was called the " filthy lucre" tour, good show it was too. plus they're kickass.
blink, greenday, they're just as commercial, cept they pretend not to be, but really, these days who isn't commercial? its not like you go into music because you hate money, if you did, you wouldn't sign with a label, or make videos. the day a rockstar gives every cent he makes away, except for keeping what the average person makes, say 80g a year to be nice, is the day i'll beleive they're not a sellout.

Dude, are you high? Sex Pistols sellouts? Um, yeah, you can call them that about 10 years ago, but only because of how it looked, but as far as they were concerned they didn't give a ****. Dude, whatever, learn your punk history. I love Travis Barker, but to put Blink in comparison to Sex Pistols is blasphemy. Shame on you.

To me, "Selling out" means making a profit by doing things or writing songs you wouldn't have normally done, just to keep your name out there.

I think in the 70's, bands like The Clash & the Sex Pistols were a lot more in control of their own destiny. Now, with record companies spending hundreds of millions of dollars to promote bands, the record companies regularly sell out the bands out as part of the deal.

You could potentially "sell-out" your garage band if there's a record company willing to pay you for your music, in exchange for you doing a commercial or something.

Did my band "sell out" after getting paid for songs used in MTV's "The Real World"? Yes and no. We promoted the hell out of our appearances, but we didn't change our style when we got modestly popular. So because we didn't play for the cameras, we ended-up nothing again.
