If you can only visit one country I would say Malaysia. It isn't the cheapest, nor is it the most expensive. The mixed culture allows you to get a taste of many parts of Asia in one location.
While their crime rate, is like most any other country (pick pockets, purse snatching...) the major threats are missing for the most part.
Also the country appears to be open to tourists from any culture with only one exception.
However for pure shopping, my vote would have to be Bangkok.
For the inexperienced traveler, Singapore is the most modern and offers the least amount of culture shock.
Off the beaten path... Sri Lanka, however only for experienced travelers. The internal unrest, could be a problem for rookies.

Thailand, The northern areas around Chaing Rai are affordable, rooms around 500 Bhat and up a million US dollar = 34 Bhat food low-value too. Southern vacationer areas are lots greater for rooms and food. Busses in Thailand are wonderfull the 1st-type bus has hostess and snacks. Air fare can get high priced, and there continues to be affordable practice commute right here., yet no longer all areas are served by making use of practice. Cambodia makes use of extra often than not US money now for the vacationer areas, assume approximately $15.00 to $25.00 a night. food is extra high priced there than in Thailand and the trafick in Phnom Phen is the WORST!!!! in case you flow you ought to flow see S-21 reformatory Pol Pots torture reformatory! The photos and human skulls will make you truly think of basically how sturdy you truly have it. Myanmar is somewhat scarey yet well worth a trip arcoss the border with Thailand up north interior the golden triangle.

Cambodia. i had been there in April 2006. it is a best place (if you like history) especially Angkor Wat. i spend 3 days at seam reap but it is not enough. i will going to seam reap again in the future.my advise is better backpacking and never go with the travel agency. besides, you must read some books regarding on Angkor before you go.
