No, we can't be independent of everyone and everything... what do you think, that humans beings are robots or something that can just completely detach themselves from what goes on around them?

Edit: Regarding the answer below, detachment is a nice concept in theory that rarely or never works out in reality. Some people can be detached sometimes (notice I said sometimes and not all of the time), but for most people it's just not possible. People are too heavily invested in the people, things, and events that make up their lives to not emotionally react to them ("spiritual awareness" notwithstanding).

Everyone wants to succeed, its a given, we like to be accepted that is why we have the problem that our kids won't go to school in anything other than nike runners, anything less is unacceptable (I'd ban designer labels if I were a principal).
As we get older we understand more about life and I think most of us realise that it doesn't matter what everyone thinks, I personally would not like to let down those few people I admire.
A death is something difficult to get through, you realise there will never be another person like the one that you have lost and only time will help you to say goodbye to them and concentrate on your own life. When you lose them you lose the relationship and the gap is there.
I always tell my children not to be a sheep, not to do things simply because everyone else is, but to decide for themselves if this is what they want to do.
Life is about relationships and we all need someone to talk to that hopefully will help us in those bad times just as we would be there for them, we are at the end of the day on our own.

Think about the question that you just asked...if you were independent from your emotions you would not be happy or sad. You wouldn't feel any emotions at all! Without sad there is no such thing as happy.

Independent of everything means being heartless
Got it? It means sometime you have to go through pain to make somebody else happy and you will be happy too.

maybe you should look more into buddhism, the core of their teaching is that things, people events etc are all external. You need to accept that you cannot always control them but you can control your response to them in order to be happier!

We simply react to what our senses relay to our minds. It is however, a natural part of being happy is to delude one's self. One thing to keep in mind is that everything you do is motivated by your own wants.
