I think our greatest problem is our inability to admit how cruel we are to each other. Everyone feels that they are exempt from the monstrous behavior that typifies humankind, but all of us have within us the capacity for destructiveness. Look at all the bad things that have happened in Iraq, for example. Abu Gharib, Haditha, etc. People express surprise and shock when they learn that Americans have behaved in such a way. Me? I'm surprised that any one is surprised.
The trouble is that these people went into these difficult situations thinking that they were going to conduct themselves according to a code. But when the chips were down, they caved to their darker natures. Why? Because they had not admitted to themselves that such cruel behavior lay within their capacity. If they had, they might have been able to recognize the terrible temptations that ultimately overwhelmed them.
I'm not saying that these soldiers are bad people. I'm just using them as an example. What I am saying, however, is that human beings are still animals and, as such, they are subject to animal instincts. But we won't admit it to ourselves, because we like to think we are better than that. Yet, if we did admit it, we could better regulate our behavior. We could turn away from cruelty. We might be able to do away with murder, road rage, rudeness and more, if we would only admit that we are not perfect beings who have been specially touched by God.

Man's ego will destroy humankind. It is his ego that causes him to hate, to be selfish, to be greedy. Because he thinks of himself superior to all others, or if he doesn't, he WANTs to be superior.
He desires to know all - the advancements of technology may very well be the death of all of us. Yes, there are many pros... But the cons can do what the pros cannot - destroy us. Furthermore this ego will not let Man give in.. Man always wants to be right.. To have his say.. To always have the upper hand.
Woe is mankind.
