I've never heard that particular phrase before. How I heard it is: "it's the best thing since white bread"! So, 1st it depends on where you heard the expression, or where you're from. Then, it would depend on which expression is older than the other, wouldn't ya' think? There is a possibility the the phrase including the term "white bread" is older than the other because the actual bread had to be invented before "whoever" began to slice it, don't ya' think? Therefore, does that mean that there was an expression before "they" (whoever the hell "they" are) invented "white bread" or "sliced bread". Okay, that would have to be a very, very long time ago. It's meaning might lend a little to its existence too - "something" is better than "something" else, which has been around since someone first had "anything" as a possession. Therefore, one can assume (you know what happens when you "assume", you make an "***" out of "u" and "me"), anyway, there probably wasn't an "expression" before that. Due partially to the fact that people probably didn't have "words" to express their "jealousy" at the time before the invention of "white bread". They just felt that "something" might be better than "something" else!

Actually, they still said 'It's the best thing since sliced bread!', but then they used to look at each other strangely, saying 'I wonder what that expression means... What is sliced bread, anyway?'
Sliced bread was invented simply to give that expression meaning.

I don't say it... I think it's stupid.
I could spend hours naming things a lot better than sliced bread that have been though up in just the past few years... let alone sence people started slicing bread.

They said it is the best thing since bread. Bread has been around for a long time. Before bread they said it is the best thing since our last cave.
