Definitely safety. If you look stylish at the same time, so be it. Leather protects against the weather and also those darned June bugs that hit so hard! When you slide down the road, you'll be glad you had it on. Also, I have wondered why so much the vests, but when you have the collar of a shirt or a light jacket whipping you in face going 55 mph for any length of time, I'll pick the vest.

Leather is "road armor". Skin grafts are NO FUN AT ALL.
Chaps are just silly. They make bikers look like they're wearing blue denim diapers.
Vests are no protection at all.
You need proper motorcycling gear - helmet, jacket, pants gloves, boots - at all times (unless you know for sure when you are going to have a wreck).
Wear the stuff. You may find (as I do) that the wind blowing through the jacket makes it quite comfortable, even when the temperature is in the 90s (F). If not, there are "perf-ed" (for "perforated") leathers especially for summertime.
ANd if you are really not into wrapping yourself in a dead cow, there are some absolutely amazing textiles out there now ... kevlar, nomar and plastics ... that manufacturers like AlpineStar, JoeRocket, FirstGear and scores of others have come up with.
The bottom line is, you have got to wear your gear for safety. Get some that's comfortable and attractive, sure, but make sure you wear it.
Cheers

Leather is OK for safety but I prefer kevlar/textile gear because of the padding. I've not seen many leather jackets or pants or chaps with padding and if I ever end up going off the bike, it would be nice to have some cushioning on my elbows and knees.

I wear leather chaps, jacket, vest, and gloves for comfort in cold, wet weather. Style has nothing to do with it. And the safest thing on my bike is me...the driver. Cause if I'm not riding sensibly, no amount of dead cow hide is going to keep me from getting hurt.

It's a lot cheaper to replace a leather jacket than to pay for skin grafts! Take it from there!!

I would look first for safety, and try to find a comfortable fit there. Style really wouldn't come into it at all, except that I probably wouldn't buy something I found butt ugly - or that made my butt look too big.
