The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
—Martin Luther King, Jr.
When one's cause is so important that it is worth lying for, it becomes immediately necessary to re-evaluate the cause.

I don't know that it diminishes your character as much as it speaks about your character, or lack thereof. To me it shows that someone is more caught up in what seems right than in doing right. It's like that proverb from the Bible.
Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
In other words, the ends don't justify the means.
On the other hand, as C.S. Lewis put it, "each decision we make turns us into another creature who is a little more like God or a little more like a demon". So I guess it could also diminish one's character as well as speak about it. Someone who compromises their values for a "noble cause" has become a slave to the cause and a fanatic at heart.

firstly let us clear up as to what noble IS and can we assign a degree of nobility to an action/purpose.
Nobility and values are both very subjective and will differ for you and me,but the important thing is to prioritize.
Hence there is no generic answer to the question , just give priorities to tasks and do not feel guilty to do high priority jobs even if they conflict with some strong held ideas.
The critical step is assigning priorities , which you have to do very judiciously,i cannot help you there.

Noble for whom? Yourself? Loved ones? Perfect strangers? And are we all not in a state of flux, learning new things that shape us, so that what was abhorrant is now natural?

no. sometimes we have to choose between one right and another right, life is not all black and white... so i don't think doing another right thing instead of another deminished your character.

I reckon that has to do with how noble the cause is, and how much you compromised your values. :D

If it's such a noble cause, why is it against your values?

If you are able to forgive yourself you will become more tolerant ; in the over-all picture, only you will be able to judge your character.
