A yeast infection is caused by the normal flora of the vagina and tends to cause white discharge and itching. A bacterial infection is caused by a different type of organism. It could be bacterial vaginosis, which is also a disturbance of the normal flora of the vagina. Bacteria can also be transmitted by sex, such as gonorrhea and chlamydia. There are also some strains of bacteria that can infect the urinary tract, which causes pain with urination. Your doctor will evaluate your history and your symptoms and probably do a urine test to check for urinary tract infections. A yeast infection can be treated with an oral medication like Diflucan or a vaginal cream like Monistat. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics, but the specific medicine depends on what type of infection you have. Good luck!

You normally have both bacteria and fungus (yeast) living in your reproductive tract and the two typically keep each other in check. A yeast infection happens when the yeast population manages to grow out of control (which happens frequently when a woman takes antibiotics for an unrelated infection and it kills of some of her vaginal bacteria as well.) A bacterial vaginal infection happens when the bacterial population multiplies out of control. It's important to know which you have. If you do, indeed, have a bacterial infection, treating it with an antifungal will be ineffective at best and at worst, will exacerbate the problem. Likewise, if you have a yeast infection, taking antibiotics will only kill off bacteria allowing the yeast to further flourish. See your doctor for a diagnosis and the appropriate treatment.

Antibiotics will take care of a bacterial infection, but yeast are fungi, and are not susceptible. A lot of times when you take an antibiotic for something, like strep throat, it also kills the "good" bacteria that are in your body--intestine, vagina. This allows the yeast to grow uncontrolled; the bacteria keep them "in check" normally by fighting for nutrients. Some women just are more likely to have yeast infections for unknown reasons, but especially after becoming sexually active. Other women may go their entire lives without having one. **Men can get them as well.

Hello, I'm on the second week and seeing definite improvement on my yeast infection symptoms:
https://bitly.im/aMAWN
Note that: If the yeast infection doesn't respond to over the counter treatment, prescription medication will likely be necessary. Similarly, if the symptoms return after two months of being treated, you should contact the doctor for professional treatment rather than resorting again to home treatment.

If this is the first time you have experienced a yeast infection, you should schedule an appointment to have the condition treated by a doctor instead of resorting to home treatment

Yeah, bacterial infection usually make you sick or some other bad thing, while the yeast just mostly makes you very uncomfortable (pain, itchy) *down there*.
Better yet...
Bacteria ("are a major group of living organisms")
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacteria
Yeast ("single-celled fungi")
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeast
So one is kinda like a plant, the other more like a tiny animal.

I've had a urinary infection and its caused by bacteria. It burns when urinating and the urge to urinate burns and is intolerable. I ignored it for a few weeks until peed my pants before I made it to the bathroom one day - it was impossible to hold. Not fun.
