Anyone trying to improve their country is a patriot. That's just common sense.

At it again, aren't we? I don't even know why I try to talk sense into you, Menifeedave.

First off, let's look at the two words. Patriotic means to represent your country and its goals and promises, or love of one's country. Liberals, or Democrats, are those who strive to better the well-being of the down-trodden. To say that "patriotic liberal" is an oxymoron would be like calling a "hot fire" an oxymoron, or "wet rain". If anything, it's redundant, like so many of your comments.

Not at all.

The Preamble to the constitution has five main clauses: "promote Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common Defense, promote the general Welfare, and ensure the blessings of Liberty".

Republicans focus mainly on the Tranquility and Defense. Liberals focus mainly on the Welfare and Liberty. And both have their own ideas about what constitutes Justice.

The US is a country with a Republican Commander-in-Sheik who willfully violates federal law, ignores the Constitution (violating his oath of office in the process), and either outright lies to the American people or is so wrapped up in political-speak that he is incapable of distinguishing truth from rhetoric. And Congress is no better.

A patriot is someone who values the principles this country was founded upon, which includes the Constitution. Just because they have different priorities within the Constitution as to what is more important doesn't make them less patriotic.

And certainly not less patriotic than elected officials who are violating their oaths to uphold the constitution. Liberals have certain values, and all of those values are founded in the principles upon which this country was founded. Just because they choose a different subset of those values than conservatives doesn't make them less patriotic.

In the political name calling era we are in, one side would have you believe the other side is an incarnation of Satan himself. We have to remember that the guy on the other side of the political fence loves America just as much as we do.

We just don't agree on how it should be run!

This is a good and healthy enviroment. It's what my dad fought in WW2 for and why I enlisted in 1971 ( boneheads wouldn't take me, said Asthma was a problem with them).

I don't think we have ever had a president in the history of America who's jumped out of bed and while brushing his teeth, thought to himself, " No how can I f--k up America, today?". I can just about bet money none of them has.

So, yes you can be a patriotic liberal or a patriotic restrictionist (conservative).

Hell, you can even be a patriotic American. Maybe we should focus on that for a change.

If you call George Washington and other founders of this country an oxymoron, then yes.

But I'm guessing your using the "new" version of Patriot, meaning if you don't support GWB, you're a traitor. Read some history.

Do you have any idea of how insulting that is? I am a loyal American. My family has fought in wars to protect this country and my son is in Iraq right now. I am a liberal and proud of it. How dare you question my patriotism? What are you doing to support the troops beside running your mouth?

Mark Twain said "a patriot is the person hollering loudest without knowing what he is hollering about"...

It is possible to be patriotic and love your country but be concerned about the adminstration ruining it....yes, GOD BLESS AMERICA and THE TROOPS...save us from the Bush administration and bring our under-equipped, overworked, tired troops home safe from whatever the hell this mission is that GW keeps lying about!

Liberals aren't patriotic, period. You don't support the troops by undermining them at home. You don't call them names and say you support the troops. You don't call them baby killers period. Also, any fool that trys to say Iraqi is another Vietnam really isn't patriotic at all.

It'd be accurate if it were true. Try traitor.

a Patriot asks, "What can I do for my country?"

a Liberal asks, "What can my country do for me?"

Not sure what a Patriotic Liberal would ask!

God bless America and God bless our troops!
