Best advise that I can give you is to fire them.
I tried that and in fact I had done most of the research prior to hiring the lawyer and it was never used.
If I had to ever hire a lawyer again I would go to the courts where you can sit in the room and watch and listen and find a lawyer that way.
good luck.

It is important to remember that the appeals process is very long and tedious, and is probably not moving as fast as you would hope. Your friend should be receiving regular updates from her attorney on the progress of her case, either on the telephone or through the mail. If she is not receiving updates, then she needs to contact her attorney directly and see if there is anything she can do to move the process along, whether it is providing additional information, or if she just has to wait. Your state probably has an online court system that she can check the status of her case on also.

Appeals take a very long time and involve a lot of paperwork. The apparent lack of action doesn't necessarily mean the attorney isn't doing anything. Your friend should talk to his/her attorney about these concerns. You cannot legally act on your friends behalf.

There is probably a set of "Rules of Civil Procedure" or "Civil Rules" that apply to the Courts in your State. You can find them if you go to a web site like findlaw, and click on your State name.
Then find the section of the rules dealing with appeals.
You will find out that there is a specific order in which things must be performed and a complicated process involving when, where and how to file the multiple documents that must be prepared.

if your friend hired that attorney, i would suggest he/she light a fire under his/her butt. if you nag your attorney enough, i'm pretty sure they will do whatever it takes to get the person of their back.
