Because the pilgrims came from England, with the hopes of making a New england, without the tyranny of the old. As for the other New states, like New Mexico and New Jersey, I suppose it was a sentimental way the settlers could honor the old country while trying to build their fortunes in the New World.
Boy, would those settlers just fall apart if they saw what had become of their hope for escape from Tyranny... all it did in the end was give tyranny a new name.
