Since you're going to be singing in a couple of days, you sure don't want your throat to be dry & certain medications can dry your throat pretty bad. I know it smells yucky, but the fastest way I've found to get rid of a cold is to put Vick's Vaporub under the nose & depending on the severity of the stuffiness, put a very tiny amount just barely on the inside of the nose. To help the mucus drain better, I eat plenty of fruit to help it go on thru the digestive system. A soda can help cut the mucus loose, too.

There is good evidence to show that zinc LOZENGES (not tablets) will help it go away if you catch it soon enough. Generally colds start with sore throat first, then move on to the nasal symptoms. If you catch it when it is still a sore throat, suck on zinc lozenges every few hours. If it has already moved on to nasal symptoms, it is too late and the lozenges won't help. You could try Zicam nasal spray then, but it's not really the best choice due to side effects. But taking zinc tablets alone will not provide the high local concentration that holding a lozenge in your throat will, so that's why tablets don't work.

I'd take vitamin C and get lots of sleep. Colds I've heard take a week to get through...
I've also heard this over the counter Airborne caplets help too. It was developed by some teacher and is suppose to speed up the cold and help get rid of it sooner or something. I found it at Wal-mart.

i work at a doctor's office i hear this all the time....increase your fluids (drink lots of water), increase your REST...seriously take a day or two off from work/school. your body needs to recover. take an appropraite over the counter medication...if you were given a prescription, finish all the medication even if you feel better. Also, the Vick's vaporizer steam machine is a big help for stuffed noses.

Echinacea works great in combo with the soup, juice, zinc and rest. Take about 6-8 of them a day....cuts the length of your cold down considerably.

if you are in a pinch, try Afrin. A few sprays will cure your stuffiness in a few minutes. It lasts around 12 hours. Bear in mind, it could give you a headache and dry mouth. Before you sing, open up your throat by drinking some lemon juice. It's nasty, but it works.
Use Afrin sparingly, it can be addicting.

Cold is caused by viruses. You cannot change their life cycle but you can decrease the severity of your condition by: using a huge amount of liquid, taking any kind of cold medications regularly, and getting rest as much as you can. Exercise is your enemy because it adds to your muscle pain and delays virus shedding.
Good luck
