Even if it isn't required, it is still a very good idea. I have always had coverage. If some idiot next door starts a fire, and you lose all your stuff, you'll have no way to replace all of that quickly. It will take a longer than you want it to. Landlord's property insurance does NOT cover your belongings.

No, it's not required in California. But if you're a tenant and you have valuable items, I would suggest that you get it.

Renters insurance is cheap and if you have to replace your furniture and clothing and CD's etc., it's well worth the few dollars a month.

its required everywhere. I live in a suburb in Michigan, its only 10 bucks a month. Most car insurance companies offer it. mine is through State Farm.

Its also in your best interest to have renters insurance in case of fire or other disaster....
