Please help me figure this out. My friends aunt died and she inherited some Hawain items.?

They are wooden balls with holes for the eyes and mouth. They have tri colored bright hair and there are ropes coming out of the eye holes with beads on the ends. They are really cool looking, but we have no idea what they are called. Can anyone tell me?
