OK, how do I check for the different things you guys think are broken & can I fix it myself? What tools will I need?

It's a very old Snapper riding mower.

you dodn't mention if it is a riding mower or a push mower. A rider could be a selector problem (broken or slipped out of position) . A self propelled mower could have the same problem but most transmissions for these mowers are sealed and can only be replaced. That is expensive!!!

The gearshift linkage running from the shifter to the transmission is messed up.

The lever that activates the rollers to the wheels is not working.
Should not be hard to trouble shoot.

It sounds like your shifting fork is broken or bent.

same thing happend to my grandpa, he said it was a pin in the transmision (whatever that is). i know cars, but when it comes to lawnmowers im dumbfounded.
