The dog is young but large. Probably shepherd / lab mix. The rooster is of course more fragile. I don't think he intends to do damage and so far the rooster has survived, minus a few feathers. If I can't solve the problem either the dog or the rooster must go.

I have dogs and chickens and the most effective method I have found is a good old rolled up newspaper a swat on the behind and a good firm no obviously you have to do this while the dog is in the act of chasing or it will do no good. Another method some people dont like them but if you have problems breaking the dog from doing this they sell shock collars that will get your point across. Good Luck!

I think if the dog ever caught the rooster he would let go real quick. Roosters have spurs. Might not be a pretty sight for the dog. Easiest solution...tie up the dog or cage the rooster. Or how about shooting water at the dog when he does it.

you have to show the dog that the you don't want the rooster hurt by having the rooster be dominant over him. make the dog lay down next to the rooster, put him in a cage or something so the dog can see that he is being made subordinate to the rooster

Yes, either get rid of the rooster or the dog who's inherent nature is to chase roosters! You can't punish a dog for doing what's built into to him to do.

Teach the rooster to stand up to the dog. I am surprised the rooster backed down.

First walk your dog,a long walk till he is tired.Make your dog lay on its side till he is relaxed(in calm submissive state (if he tries to get up hold him down (2 fingers on the neck as if a bite)) Once he is relaxed place the chicken on top of him making sure he stays laid down(the dog). Once he (the dog) is relaxed again take the rooster off.Do this for 1 month. The reason he is chaseing the rooster is he has tooooo much energy.Dogs are bread to work. I saw this done(with a parrot in a cage) on an eppisode of "The Dog Whisperer" (Ceasar Millan) If you have cable its on "National Geographic Channel"

Lock the dog in a cage with an old broody hen. Once she gets through with him he'll run the other way if he even sees the rooster. If that doesn't work then you must get rid of him. Labs are, after all, bird dogs by breeding. Good luck.
