What would cause my 99 Grand Am se to sound like a big Harley Davidson

Sounds like you have a hole in exhaust system, the muffler , pre silencer, pipes or any combo of these.
If you a driving a '99 car you are most likely near the 100K mark in miles. Exhaust systems have to withstand high heat, corrosion, and vibration under your car, 5 years or 100K mile is about all it's going to take without service before a "blow out" hole appears
If you want to inspect yourself, you can crawl beneath your car with a flashlight and an inspection mirror (similar to a compact makeup mirrior on a telescoping pole, found at any tool shop or hardware store). BE CAREFUL and make sure the parking brake is on and you are outside.
If you dont want to get dirty, most of the national chain muffler shops like Sears, Midas, Tuffy, etc. can do inspection for free and show you the problem.
expect $200-$400 for a new system

Sounds like a exhaust leak. check the manifolds & e.g.r valve gasket. The catylitic converter & muffler have to be in bad shape to sound like that.Visit your local muffler shop & ask them to perform a back pressure test to rule out catylitic converter.

Get your exhaust fixed. If you find a good muffler shop, it will cost around 100-150 bucks.

Check the exhaust system for leaks, inspect the catalytic converter and replace them if necessary.

Sounds like exhaust problems from hole in muffler to broken flange at the catalytic convertor.

sounds like hole in pipes, but also check to see if it has a sparkplug not sparking or a hole in one of the pistons.
