For pre-history, one would have to consider contests related to hunting activities (running, throwing various items like rocks and spears, etc.). Throwing knucklebones and other gambling games would appear to have prehistoric origins, and wrestling might not merely be prehistoric but prehuman.
We know that ancient peoples played ball games, as we have representations of these. Greek vase paintings show a ball game played with sticks, rather like field hockey.
The original Olympic Games, which are based on funeral games recorded in legends, included various running and hurling contests plus boxing, wrestling and a form of no-holds-barred fighting called the "pankration," which was often fatal to the competitors. Horse and chariot racing were added later The Games have been dated to 776 BCE, which is recent in the span of the human race.
