No, they are not. Canker sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex 1 virus. What you need to do is go to your GP, and see if he/she will prescribe you some medicine for HSV 1 suppression. Strep is caused by a number of bacteria called strepaccocous. It causes fever, swollen tonsils, and sore throat. Hope he feels better!

white puss marks in the throat are a sign of strep. (been there with my own kid). Also, that red cheek look (slapped face appearance) along with the puss and severe sore throat are signs of strep. Vomiting can accompany it too.

Canker sores all over his mouth are a symptom of the coxsackie virus. (hand, foot, mouth virus). My son had it when he was three and he had about 20 sores all in his mouth. It was horrible. It takes about a week to feel better. They can get these sores on their hands and feet as well. Check your childs palms and bottoms of their feet very carefully. If they are red and marbly or have red dots, then that is probably the coxsackie virus. The worst part is the sores in the mouth. They are probably not true cankers, but they sure look and feel the same. My son didn't get them anywhere but in his mouth. If your child is in daycare, you can bet it's hand foot mouth.

Canker sores are also viral. No antibiotics will fix it. Just time. Good luck to your son.....it's terrible.
