Being self confident takes a lil time and practice when a friend/family member constantly keeps saying oh let me help you and blah blha blahg or calling you names...its best to keep an open mind about it and think to yourself they could be self concious as well. Try speaking your mind and when you do speak say it from the heart. People tend to notice self confidence when it comes from the heart.
Whenever people down size you it shows that they are a bit uncomfortable about themselves so they rather direct the uneasiness towards someone else. It takes time to build confidence but you will achieve it if you say exactly what you think/feel and that will put a major boost in gaining confidence. And always believe you can do it.

May I suggest reading The Alchemist by coelho, Science of Mind by E. Holmes, and the Magic of Believing by Edgar Cayce as well as the Four Agreements by an another I can't recall but, you can find all the books at the library or go to your nearest bookstore and just flip through the books..
I myself often lack confidence but in the last few years since having read these books- Alchemist is on CD and is read very well- they have all helped me tremedously.
Also, to quote a Lady that runs a spiritual shop in Sacramento "everyone is born perfect, it's when we begin to doubt ourselves or let others put us down and that we begin to believe that we are imperfect. Remember everyone is perfect even you, even if you don't realize it."

The first thing you must do is evaluate yourself and ask yourself Why do they think that you are a goofball? Then evaluate your answer and take the necessary steps to change there way of thinking by the power of doing. Set your goals and meet them head on Once people see that you are serious they will change their opinion of you.

A leadership class helps, I'm not kidding it does. My friend was very shy but started taking leadership classes in the middle of the school year and at the end of the year she performed at the talent show in front of the school it really helps!
Good luck!

Your family would actually be the best people to practice with. It's really easy once you do it the first time. Just start by explaining that it bothers you when they make fun of you.

First of all, don't use others opinion of you to gauge your opinion of you.You sound like a fun loving, genuinely warm person, and you should be proud of who you are. Live in your head, not in anyone else's.

Show some more cleavage and flash your gams at strangers. It's a self-esteem booster.
