You might need to change the transmission filter I had that problem a few months ago on my car. If you try that you will need to change the transmission fluid also. It might not look "dirty" but it very well maybe.

Does reverse work without slipping . Sounds like foward clutches may be bad possably the governer (it controls upshifts) Has it been serviced regularly ? Does the fluid look dark and smell burnt? A rebuilt should run in the neighborhood of $650 installed

in the turbo 350 there is a screw that holds the filter in place if it is too tight it will not let the tranny shift int high gear because it binds the high gear valve in the valve body

If its automatic check fluid levels first. Theannys need hydraulic pressure to shift. If flud level is ok the issue is most likely a slave cylinder not actuating or clutch pack bands slipping. both issues are internal and will need a trans repair shop ti diagnose
If you have a manual, shift linkages and/or cable will have to be checked

sounds like the trans. filter is not allowing enough fluid to shift in 3rd and if driven too much could cause slipping in 2nd which can cause metal flakes to deposit in the fluid. these flakes can be so small it reacts like graphite so best to use a nylon screen over the pail when dumping your trans. fluid and using a magnet over the nylon to check. if you find small graphite then you will need to flush your transmission until it is clean. making sure to change the filter.

Sorry it's time to get another ride your 3rd shift has gone out and fixing a 72 chev is going to be worth more than the truck is worth.

Like some of them said it could be the trans, or fluid, it could even be the timing belt, or something my have come lose under the shifter. I had that problem one time with my 87 camaro and a bolt had come lose under the clutch under the car.

It could be the vacuum modulator valve or a vacuum leak to the valve. The valve raises the shift points under low vacuum conditions(wide open throttle). The hose may have been knocked off at the oil+filter change.

It is the transmission. Pretty expensive to put another on in expecially on a 72.

Fluids are low, or a leaky gasket...also can get the slave cylinder checked
