Well, I suppose I'll have to add my two cents in:
1. Louis Armstrong - for being the first black musician to "cross-over" to mainstream white audiences, making it acceptable for the very first time for blacks and whites to intermingle socially.
2. Duke Ellington - for providing creativity, class, and longevity to the entire genre, also crossing over to mainstream white audiences, but also making the African-American experience something to be honored and revered through his compositions.
3. Charlie Parker - for being the boldest pioneer of a new style of Jazz, called Bebop, bringing the quality of individual musicianship of jazz players to the level of virtuousity.
4. Miles Davis - for continuing the legacy of the Bird, the virtuosic playing, the artful compositions and the ability to surround himself with young (or young-minded) musicians who were ready to follow where he led. Also, he was never satisfied with the status quo - musically, professionally, or socially - and not being afraid to (in his words) "change Music 3 or 4 times."
5. Benny Goodman - for being the first white bandleader to hire a black musician. Not only could Benny blow a mean clarinet, he put the Music (the very idea of music) before any personal, professional and societal strictures of the day.
My personal favorite has to be Miles Davis.
Peace,
VT
